Take Me Out

Phoenix, 2005. Originally inspired by a Tears For Fears song. What if the girl in the song had been a little more homocidally unhinged? I also liked having the title not mean what it seems to mean.

I don't suppose you'd like to tell me what this means.
I've put up with stuff like this too many times, it seems.
Too late, go slow, put your dreams on hold.
The sun is going down, the weather's growing cold.

You had no right to tell me the truth.
The future we made is long in the tooth.

Take me out, take me out tonight,
Take me out of this nightmare.
Take me out ...

You never understood the subtle lines you shouldn't cross.
You showed up on my doorstep ruffled, wild-eyed, looking lost.
I meant nothing by letting you inside.
What better place to find yourself? What better place to hide?

I had no right to give you my heart,
We sewed it together, but it was torn at the start.

Take me out, take me out of here,
Take me out, I'm too near the fire.
Take me out ...

What's that in your hand? Give it to me.
What's that in your hair? Come close so I can see.

I don't suppose you'd like to tell me what you mean.
I didn't pay attention to the warning signs, it seems.
Put that down and walk right out the door.
One of us is leaving here right now, of that I'm sure.

Blood stains my hand like the shadow of love.
I cried out for help, but it won't come fast enough.

Take me out, take me out tonight,
Take me out of this nightmare.
Take me out, take me out of here,
Take me out, I'm too near the fire.
Take me out,
Take me out,
Take me ...
