Writing on the Sea

Late in the evening, I see the sun rise,
In the glow of the moon that reflects in your eyes,
In the blue, in the turning-to-indigo skies,
And I forget all your promises, forget all your lies.

I'm a fool beyond reason, a patriot trapped in treason,
Standing in the cold and freezing, a song out of its season.

I know I shouldn't be going like this,
But I know all my words will get lost in your kiss,
And I watch all our lifetimes slip into the abyss,
And I wonder how long we could've held on to this.

Even now all my words are like writing on the sea,
The singing of the birds lost in the wind through the trees,
I hope I can see clearly, but I know you cloud my vision,
Searching hard for words to use against me, when you strike with such precision
By only looking in my eyes.
